Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
Motorists will now be
able to make payments online for all vehicle and driver's licence card
renewals.
Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula's launched a new online payment system on Thursday to help ease congestion at driving licence testing centres.
He said the new system will shorten queues and help reduce corruption at these facilities.
Reflecting on the current process of obtaining a driver's licence - Mbalula said to get a driver's licence in South Africa is a nightmare.
"It's like you are going to be slaughtered...The online system has been enhanced to allow financial institutions, insurance companies and vehicle dealerships to register vehicles directly on the NaTIS system.
"This will improve convenience and help to combat rampant crime associated with the change of ownership of vehicles."
He said they have been hard at work to finalise the introduction of the online submission of eye test results by private optometrists registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
"We remain hopeful that we will finalise this matter soon and bring this crucial service on stream at the earliest convenience."
