The 46th 'down run' of the iconic race will end for the first time at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on the Durban beachfront.

Next year's Comrades will be held on June 10.

The Comrades Marathon Association says it's working towards ensuring next year's edition of the race is as close to the distance of the 2016 'down run' as possible. The official distance of the 2016 race was 89.2km.

The association says the route between the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and Durban will only change in the last 8km. Organisers are looking at a modified route through the Berea.

As it stands, this would take runners through the suburbs of Sherwood, Sydenham, Overport Clare Estate and the Berea.

The CMA says it also wants to avoid the N3 freeway - the main artery to the city of Durban. Entries for next year's race close on November 30 or whenever the entry cap of 20 000 is reached.
