New Covid-19 cases rise by over 9 000, 81 new deaths

The number of Covid-19 cases in South Africa now stands at 3 433 554.

The National Institute for Communicable Diseases said on Wednesday evening that 9 020 new coronavirus cases had been recorded since its previous report.

This represents a 26.0% positivity rate.

The majority of new cases are from KwaZulu-Natal (28%), followed by Western Cape (21%), while Gauteng accounted for 21% and the Eastern Cape accounted for 15%.

The death toll has climbed to 90 935, with 81 new deaths reported.

There has been an increase of 458 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours.

The country's recovery rate currently stands at 91.6%, with just over 197 000 active cases. 

Over the last 24 hours, 48 874 vaccines were administered.
