New Covid-19 cases fall below 10 000

The number of new Covid-19 cases reported in one day dipped to below 10 000 on Sunday.
Statistics released on Sunday by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) show that 9 718 new cases were reported in the latest 24-hour period.
The latest increase in infections represents a 26.6% positivity rate.
A total of 287 new Covid-related deaths were reported on the day, bringing the country’s total fatalities to 69 775.

Gauteng, which has been the epicentre of South Africa’s third wave, continues to account for the majority of new cases at 28%.
The province is closely followed by the Western Cape at 25% and KwaZulu-Natal at 14%.
