Nersa questions whether Eskom monitored power usage

Eskom bosses have come to Durban to try and convince ratepayers why they need to take electricity prices up again.

Public hearings on the utility's request for an increase will continue in the city this morning.

Eskom says a tariff hike would help Eskom recoup around R67-billion in money that was overspent over the past three years.

Our power producer says it has been battling with increasing operational costs and long-standing debt.

Eskom's Deon Conradie told NERSA yesterday that they have also asked consumers to reduce their power usage by 10 percent in an effort to cut costs.

"So it was a matter of load shedding. It's extremely difficult to quantify that because not all customers save 10 percent," Conradie said.

NERSA's Nomfundo Maseti was not impressed though.

She feels Eskom has not done enough to reduce reckless spending.

"When you made a request, did you see any reaction from customers. You have to monitor the consumption levels. You don't just make a request and never expect to get a response to the request. Tell us the response to the request and for purposes of the application. The question was, did you adjust for it or not," Maseti said.

Public hearings continue at the Durban ICC today.
