On Wednesday night, the ANC announced that Kaunda had been recalled and would be redeployed to the National Council of Provinces.

Friday will be his last day at the office.

The DA's Thabani Mthethwa says Kaunda presided over the collapse of service delivery and infrastructure in the city.

"His legacy such as we stand now non-revenue of water stands at 57 to 58 per cent. His other legacy is his failure to collect money owed to the municipality."

ActionSA's Zwakele Mcwango says they welcome Kaunda's removal but believe he was sacrificed for a DA-ANC coalition.

"Unfortunately, we see this as Kaunda becoming a scapegoat for the DA and ANC coalitions. DA has made some demands to the ANC to say they will support them at the national level and provincial level on condition they remove Kaunda."

The EFF's Themba Mvubu also believes Kaunda's departure is meant to make way for a new coalition government.

"We note his departure and our observation is that it was one of the preconditions that they put by organisations like the DA and IFP. It is no surprise."

The announcement of Kaunda's recall came just hours after the IFP confirmed that they had agreed to form a government of national unity with the ANC and DA.

It's as the clock ticks to the inaugural sitting of the 7th parliament on Friday and the election of a new president.

IFP leader Velenkosini Hlabisa announced that in KZN they were working towards a government, having met with the ANC, DA and NFP.
