Muslim marriages formally recognised

President Cyril Ramaphosa has signed the Divorce Amendment Bill into law.
It amends the Divorce Act to protect Muslim women and children in the event of a divorce.
The Divorce Act previously differentiated between people married under the Marriage Act and those married under Islamic Law.

Two years ago, the Constitutional Court ruled that the lack of recognition of Muslim marriages infringes on the dignity of Muslim women.
It found Muslim women and their children were not afforded the legal remedies and protections that are available under the Marriage Act.
The case stemmed from a challenge brought by the Women's Legal Centre.
