Municipalities ‘must axe’ under-performing water contractors

Parliament says under-performing contractors on water
projects will be dropped.

The Water and Sanitation Portfolio Committee was questioned on Tuesday about what is being done to speed up delivery.
It has revealed that nine out of 17 projects in the various provinces, including KwaZulu-Natal, remain incomplete.
Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina says they will be tightening oversight to ensure work is delivered on time.
" It is the responsibility of municipalities to ensure that they appoint credible contractors. It is very true that most of the contractors are unable to finish the contract work on time. Others become bankrupt whilst on the project, and they leave the site. However, municipalities take time to replace or to monitor those contractors ."

The department's Director-General, Sean Phillips, said efforts to boost water supply in struggling municipalities have been ramped up.
He said water boards have been deployed across several provinces to step in and offer support.
" We have asked our water boards to assist the municipalities to address the issues, such as Mogale Water assisting the City of Tshwane to address the water issues in Hammanskraal, Rand Water assisting Emfuleni to address the sanitation issues, Vaal Central assisting Mathabeng and Maluti-A-Phofung Local Municipality and uMngeni uThukela Water board assisting Umkhanyakude Municipality."
