Msunduzi opens public engagement over proposed tariff hikes
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Officials in Msunduzi say they have begun a public engagement process over the latest round of proposed tariff hikes.
If the increases go through, residents could be paying 7% more on rates, 21,65% on electricity and 35% on water.
There has already some pushback, with the chairperson of the Msunduzi Association of Residents, Ratepayers and Civics last week describing the proposed hikes as outrageous because they are well above inflation.
Mayor Mzimkhulu Thebolla says they want to ensure that all parties are on the same page.
"We have put forward proposals on how we are going to adjust our tariffs for the next three financial years, that is, 2023, 2024 -'25 and 2025-'26 financial years.
"But of course, the main focus is on this financial year, we are doing that to fulfil the requirements of the municipal systems act and all other legislations that govern the budgeting processes of municipalities."
