The Department of Basic Education has set aside R1.8 billion for text books while R2.3 million will go towards HIV and Aids programmes in schools.
Minister Angie Motshekga tabled her budget in Parliament earlier this afternoon.
She says more than 3000 schools have been equipped with mobile classes and reading corners in their classrooms.
Motshega says there's a plan to improve academic performance at some schools.
She says more than 4 000 schools in five provinces have been identified for remedial work.
"These include Libode and Mount Frere in the Eastern Cape; Pinetown and Uthungulu in KZN; Vhembe in Limpopo, Bohlabelao in Mpumalanga and Bojanala in the North West. These districts have been profiled, their pressing needs profiled and identified for remedial work," she said.
