Mother, boyfriend in Phoenix assault case back in court

A Phoenix mother and her boyfriend, who assaulted her four-year-old daughter, to the point of unconsciousness - will be back in the Verulam Magistrate's Court today.

There was outrage when video footage surfaced, showing the woman repeatedly kicking her daughter, apparently after the child stepped on the man's shoes.  

A man sitting on a bed is seen filming the assault which took place in February.  

The pair's bail of R3000 each was revoked after the video emerged.

The woman and her boyfriend were initially charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm - but this was later changed to attempted murder.

It's alleged the little girl was beaten after stepping on her mother's boyfriend's shoes.

The man allegedly punched the child before throwing her against a cabinet.

The girl's mother claims her partner then demanded that she too give her daughter a hiding.

The four-year-old girl suffered bruises to her body and her legs were completely swollen. She also had a blood clot on her brain.

She started walking over a week ago, with the aid of a walker after weeks spent recovering in hospital.
