Updated | By ECR Newswatch
A young mother is due to appear in court facing a charge of child neglect.
According to police, the 22-year-old woman left her three-day-old baby girl with a street vendor at Warwick Avenue in the Durban CBD on Tuesday afternoon saying she would come back for the child in a short while.
When she didn't return, the vendor took the child to a police station.
Officers then took the newborn to a place of safety where she remains.
Police traced the mom and she was taken into custody yesterday.
The police's Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offences Unit is investigating further.
