The department says it is working hard to protect children after another six pupils came forward with similar allegations against the man.

The learners are all between the ages of 14 and 16 years.

Officials believe the incident occurred at the teacher's cottage on the premises of the rural school.

MEC for Education, Mthandeni Dlungwana visited the high school yesterday where a decision was taken to suspend the teacher with immediate effect.

"We've also taken a decision to appoint a team that is going to do further investigations because there are other allegations against other teachers at the school level. Learners are saying they are also involved with having a sexual relationships with a learners," he said.

The teacher is facing charges of statutory rape and sexual abuse. Police say he never reported for duty yesterday and remains at large.
