Mooi River school shut down for failing to meet registration requirements

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal has warned parents and guardians not to send their children to schools that are not recognised by the department.

It shut down a Mooi River school over registration issues this week, prompting demonstrations by angry parents.
Officials say Bridgeview Primary operated without meeting its registration requirements for over a decade.
"There are particular requirements that schools have to meet; some of them are the curriculum, secondly, with regards to how they collect their fees, teaching and learning and other things that are involved in an institution called a school," says KZN Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi.

"Normally when people apply with us, they will have started to operate, then we would send our officials to go to the school to check whether they do meet such requirements."
Mahlambi says the department gave the school time to collect all the relevant information.
"After that period lapses and the institution still has not met those requirements, a communication will be issued to the school to say if you operate, you operate not in recognition by the Department of Education."
