Monthly food basket rises to R5,400
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
The Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group says the average cost of a household food basket has risen to more than R5,400 a month.

The group released its Household Affordability Index for May.
It tracked 44 basic food items, from 47 supermarkets and 32 butcheries in KwaMashu, Umlazi, Isipingo, Durban CBD, Hammarsdale, Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, and Mtubatuba.
The data shows it now costs under R1 000 a month to feed a child a nutritious diet.

It's up by R6 since April and R25 year-on-year.
The group's Mervyn Abrahams says the rising prices are a driver of food insecurity in South Africa.
" The main foods that are pushing up the cost of this index include potatoes, which increased over the past month by 7%, and 10 kilograms of onions, which have increased from R101.30 cents in April to R124.18 in May."
