Paramedics declared Biyela dead at the scene.

The 31-year-old Jay was airlifted to hospital but passed away the following day.

His mother, Mary Jay, says she thought he was safe.

"He really loved the security industry. He thought he would be safer because he was with a partner at all times, but if you ambushed, that's what happens."

Jay's girlfriend Megan Pelzer says they were on the phone just hours before the incident.

"His mom phoned me and she told me that he has been shot. At first I didn't want to believe it, and I asked her are you joking or are you being serious. She says that he has been shot in the head and that he is in critical condition."

"When I heard that I just broke down and I immediately went to my dad and I couldn't speak. It took me a while to be able to get words out to tell my dad what was going on."

Police have still not confirmed what exactly happened.

A murder investigation has been opened.
