Mkhwanazi orders tighter discipline in SAPS ranks

KwaZulu-Natal’s top cop has ordered stricter controls within the
ranks to curb the growing financial burden of civil claims against the police.

Provincial Police CommissionerNhlanhla Mkhwanazi said poor discipline and weak command are costing SAPS millions.
In the past financial year, civil claims against police in KZN have dropped by almost 700 cases to just over 3,000 compared to the previous year.
Most were linked to unlawful arrests, detentions, and reckless driving.

Despite this improvement, more than R3.3 billion in claims were lodged in the last financial year.
However, after legal reviews dismissed some as baseless and exploitative, only R154 million was paid out.
Mkhwanazi recently told a meeting with commanders to tighten oversight and enforce basic policing principles.
