Mkhambathini Local Municipality elects new mayor
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
Eric Ngcongo has been elected as mayor of the Mkhambathini Local Municipality.
The municipality is the administrative area in the uMgungundlovu District in the Kwazulu Natal Midlands.
Ngcongo, a former deputy mayor, was elected during the municipality's first council meeting after the local Government Elections earlier this month.
It's one of 15 municipalities across the province meeting today.
Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube says at all meetings, the Mayor, Speaker, Deputy Mayor and members of the executive council will be elected, but not committee members.
“We’ve decided that for councillors, they need to understand first what are the committees, what kind of committees are allowed, what kind of committees are section 80, what kind of committees are section 79, how are they chaired by whom, and what happens in those committees. So we will be having that session in a week’s time.”
He replaces former mayor, Thobekile Maphumulo.
