Motshekga briefed the media ahead of her department's budget vote in Parliament.

"There was a view that the criminality levels have gone unacceptably high. We have instances that were reported where teachers were attacked in school in front of learners," says Motshekga.

Motshekga says crime has a negative effect on learners and their ability to study.

"Our schools are being targeted by vandals who steal educational equipment," says Motshekga.

The minister says her department is working with police to make schools safer.

"Schools are a vital place for learners to feel safe."
