Millions poured into security at SA's ports
Updated | By Zongile Nhlapo
The Transnet National Ports Authority has invested nearly a billion rand in port security systems across the country.
Port of Durban Manager Moshe Motlohi says they've faced problems with theft of cargo - damage of port assets and stowaways who use ports to gain access into the country illegally.
The upgraded system can detect objects in low visibility areas - with double the surveillance cameras than before.
The Port of Durban's control room was the first to go live last week.
Motlohi says this is a necessary investment.
"For us really, this means there will be increase security and safety in the port. The claims that we're getting will [be] reduced and ultimately the perception around how the South African ports are seen as safe gateways for trade safety will improve," he said.
