Memorial to be unveiled for 15 killed in Bergville political violence
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Premier Senzo Mchunu will today unveil a memorial dedicated to 15 people who were killed during political violence in the Bergville area, near the Drakensburg more than 20 years ago.
They were killed during clashes between the ANC and IFP in 1993. The region was under IFP control at the time. The premier's spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, says those who perished will today be remembered for their contribution towards the freedom of political association.
He says political factions can learn a lot from the tense political past of our province.
"We cannot afford to go back to that era of conflict. We must unite as the people of KZN across all political lines, and work towards the normalisation of public discourse," he said.
"We can only do that if we unite as the people of KZN," Sibiya said.
