Other provinces include Gauteng, Western Cape and the Eastern Cape

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu briefed the media on Friday morning on crime statistics for the fourth quarter of the 2024/25 financial year.

He said most crime categories dropped between January and March compared to the same period last year.

"Yet, when compared to the same period last year, the current statistics offer some encouragement. Among the top 30 police stations for murder, 13 stations registered lower outcomes, and two stations recorded no change," said Mchunu.

"We will continue to intensify efforts to reduce the overall murder rate in the country and other crimes."

Mchunu has admitted that challenges remain, especially in sexual offences like rape, which have increased.

KZN recorded the highest rape numbers, contributing 19.9% to the national total, followed by Gauteng with 19.1%.

"These are deeply concerning trends that demand renewed focus and urgent intervention," the minister said.

"Let me be unequivocal, every crime that is reported in South Africa is recorded and accounted for by the South African Police, whether it occurs in urban or rural areas."
