Matric results: DA disputes official pass rate

The Democratic Alliance has accused Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga of fabricating the matric results saying the real pass rate is 51.4% instead of 76.4%.

The minister on Thursday announced the pass rate for the class of 2021 was 76.4% an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared to 2020's pass rate of 76.2%.

The party says the official results do not take into consideration the high drop out rate of 341 403 learners between grades 10 to 12.

DA Education shadow Minister, Baxolile Nodaba, says the Department must stop trying to bury the truth of its ineptitude.

"The minister must stop whitewashing the matric results in an attempt to mask the systematic failures of her department", he said.

"She should implement innovative retention strategies, do away with rotational timetables, track learners who drop out and accelerate the development of a curriculum that is relevant to the country's economy", Nodaba said.

"It is time to put our learners first", he said.
