Matric Maths rewrite letter a hoax
Updated | By News24
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says a letter circulated on social media saying matriculants will have to rewrite a maths exam is a fake.
The fake letter looked like it was written on an official department letterhead, and was supposedly issued on behalf of "H.M Mweli Director-General DBE".
"That [letter] is fraud," spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said.
He says the department had made no such announcement. Hubert Mathanzima Mweli is however the director general of the department.
The fake letter said: "Due to reports of the premature circulation of the Core Mathematics Paper 2 all National Senior Certificate Candidates having written the paper on the 2nd of November this year are to re-write the subject on Monday, 30 November 2015 from 09:00 to 12:00."
Some Twitter users laughed at the "prank", while others were still looking for clarity on whether it was real or not. User @SipzLeThingz said: "Matric maths rewrite real or?" while Mo Amod said: "Lol at whoever made the fake maths paper 2 rewrite letter!
Any matric's worst nightmare."Another user Sinenhlanhla quipped: "Just for that prank, all the Maths marks for Matric must be increased by 10% to relieve us from this emotional distress."
