Massmart refuses to budge from wage offer to Makro employees
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Massmart says it will not budge from its wage offer of 4.5% for Makro employees.

The company's Brian Leroni says the South African Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union's demand of 12 percent increase and 20 percent commission on sales is unrealistic.
Workers affiliated with the union workers began the 10-day picket at Makro stores nationwide.
In Durban, a group marched to the Springfield Park outlet.
Leroni says SACCAWU's demands are contradictory as the union accepted what Massmart offered to workers at its other retailers, Game and Builders.

"There is little support for the strike amongst SACCAWU members. In fact, we have seen a massive spike in resignations form the union since the strike was announced.
"This is in addition to the more than 1 200 Makro employees who have already resigned from the union in order to accept the company's wage offer."
Workers also want the number of working hours a month to be raised from 160 a month to 195.
They are demanding a R100 a month uniform allowance and for 13th cheques to be made separate from December salaries.
Earlier, Massmart said it was business as usual today at its Makro stores.
