Mapisa-Nqakula: Parliament implementing Zondo commission recommendations
Updated | By Noxolo Miya
Parliament's presiding officers have denied claims of the legislature not pulling its weight in the fight against state capture.
The presiding officers met with Chief Justice Raymond Zondo to discuss his recent remarks on Parliament's handling of the state capture commission's recommendations.
Zondo, the commission's chairperson, told an event last week that he wasn't confident in Parliament's ability to prevent a repeat of the large-scale looting of state coffers, based on previous actions by MPs on similar issues.
National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula briefed the media on Thursday on the meeting with Zondo.
She said they provided the chief justice with some clarity on the work done by Parliament.
Mapisa-Nqakula said out of the 19 recommendations made by the commission relating specifically to Parliament, 11 had been implemented.
She said the implementation of the other eight is underway.
"The perception created that Parliament was not implementing the commission's recommendations with the necessary speed is far from the truth.
"Both parties expressed their willingness to continue engaging on matters of neutral interest and concern, highlighting the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and cooperation between the Judiciary and the legislature to uphold the democratic values and institutions that underpin our society."
