While the details surrounding the incident aren't clear, it's understood that he tried to open fire on a police officer.

"I would suggest all members of the public stay clear of this area as it is an active crime scene and will be for quite some time," says ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

Jamieson says emergency teams were called to Lillian Ngoyi Road.

"Paramedics arrived on scene to find SAPS already in attendance, with the area cornered off. Paramedics found a male, believed to be in his 30s, had sustained gunshot wounds to his body, and there was nothing paramedics could do for him, and he was declared deceased on the scene.

"A police officer sustained minor injuries and was treated on the scene.

"At this stage, the events leading up to the shooting are unknown. All necessary authorities are in attendance and will be investigating further."
