Man nabbed at Ladysmith diamond dig

Ladysmith police, who are monitoring the site where hundreds of people have joined the dig in search of diamonds, have arrested a man driving a suspected stolen vehicle.

Officers have been keeping a close watch in the KwaHlathi area, where scores of people have arrived to search for the precious stones. 


The illegal mining expedition was prompted by claims by some residents last week that they had found diamonds.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Thembeka Mbele says officers arrested one of two men riding in the bakkie. 


"The vehicle was searched and a pistol with no serial number, one rifle and 16, R303 rounds of ammunition and 47 shotgun ammunition were recovered.


"There were two suspects inside the vehicle but the other one managed to run away. 


"The motor vehicle was taken to Ladysmith pound and the suspect appeared before Escourt Magistrate's Court, facing possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and also possession of suspected stolen motor vehicle."
