Man gunned down, passenger injured in Umlazi

A man died after he was ambushed while sitting in his car in Umlazi, south of Durban, on Friday afternoon.

It's believed he was attacked by a group of armed men who fired several shots at him.


Emergency services and authorities were still working the scene at a petrol station at the Mega City shopping centre on Friday afternoon. 


Among those who responded are Emer-G-Med paramedics.


Spokesperson Kyle van Reenen says there was also a second occupant who was also shot at.

"Reports from the scene indicate that two men were seated in a vehicle when a number of armed suspects approached them, firing upon them with high calibre rifles.


"On arrival on scene, paramedics found the driver still seated in his vehicle having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was declared deceased on arrival.


"The passenger, a male 46-years of age, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and intermediate life support intervention were needed to stabilise him before he was rushed through to a hospital for further care. The South African Police were in attendance and will be investigating the matter."
