Madonsela talks success of motion of no confidence vote

Former Public Protector, Thuli Madonsela believes there's a 30% chance the motion of no confidence in President Jacob Zuma will succeed this afternoon.

Madonsela shared her prediction on the outcome of the debate and vote in Parliament at the FNB Businesswomen's Breakfast with East Coast Radio at the Durban ICC earlier.

She says voting should always be a democratic process so leaders are held to account.

"Democracy is about both putting people into power and removing them. Our constitution gives us various ways to remove people.

"We can remove them at the end of their term, or during their term. It's about 'we've entrusted you with our collective resources and power because we thought you were the most competent, selfless and the most trustworthy'," she says.

Madonsela says a direct cause for removal must first be established - with the president given an opportunity to provide answer.

"I wonder if it wouldn't have been a better deal if Parliament has a hearing where everyone got to hear those things we're seeing on the internet lifted to a Parliamentary platform. and all [ordinary South Africans] get to hear the full story," Madonsela says.

Madonsela was joined by other keynote speakers; trend analyst Dion Chang, business executive Phuti Mahanyele and FNB's Michelle Geraghty at the event.
