Madonsela to meet with KZN officials

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela will meet with eThekwini officials, Human Settlements MEC Ravi Pillay and the Provincial Police Commissioner this morning to address issues plaguing Glebelands Hostel in Umlazi and Durban's Kennedy Road informal settlement.
Madonsela's inspection of the two areas yesterday follows complaints over the ongoing killings and living conditions at the hostel as well as reports of alleged expenditure exceeding R30-million on the construction of 700 temporary houses.
She says while concerns were raised about the lack of police action at Glebelands, she says a lot has been done to catch perpetrators.
"We found that there have been some people who have been arrested and that there are investigations that have started. Whether that has been enough, that's something that we will discover as we commence with a proper investigation.
"There has also been allegations that there are police that are taking sides. But all of these are allegations - we would appeal though to the SAPS to make sure that the people that spoke to us are protected," she said.
