Madiba in World Rugby Hall of Fame

The Department of Sport and Recreation says former President Nelson Mandela's induction into the World Rugby Hall of Fame should remind South Africans that standing united can yield great achievements.

The induction took place during a special ceremony at St James' Park in the United Kingdom on Saturday, ahead of the Springboks' Pool B Rugby World Cup match against Scotland.

Madiba has been credited as being the inspiration behind South Africa's famous 1995 World Cup victory, uniting South Africans across all races.

The department's Esethu Hasane says South Afrians should follow in the footsteps of the late former South African president.

"The leadership he displayed, courage, respect, honour and good governance that he served with is something we should all aspire to and emulate. So, this award means a lot for South Africans.

"It's a reminder that we should keep Nelson Mandela in our memory and interpret that memory into action," he said.

The team's captain Francois Pienaar was at the match to receive the cap.
