Hundreds of workers affiliated to Cosatu have forced the shutdown of the N3 towards Durban at the Mariannhill Toll Plaza - near Pinetown.

Some protestors who made their way to Mariannhill from Pietermaritzburg conducted a go-slow on the busy route

The workers federation says the cost of living in South Africa and the regular fuel price hikes are suffocating the poor. These motorists are unhappy over the delays.

Traffic on the N3 towards Pietermaritzburg is still moving freely through the area. Meanwhile, a go-slow is also being staged on the N2 south - with heavy congestion reported from Tongaat.

Cosatu in KZN says South Africans cannot continue to absorb regular fuel price hikes and the increased cost of living. Edwin Mkhize says poor South Africans cannot even afford to get to work.

"The perpetual increase in fuel must be reversed now. The increase in VAT must be reduced now. That's a clear message. We have made other proposals - to support public transport, and [tax] exempted food - so that people can afford food," he said.
