LISTEN: KZN’s Sibudu Cave awarded world heritage status

A local professor says designating historical buildings or places as heritage sites allows for the preservation of their rich history.

UN agency UNESCO awarded world heritage status to three sites in the country, including the rock shelter Sibudu Cave, north of Durban.
The UKZN's Dr Augustinus Phoofolo says that this also supports sustainable tourism, making it a destination frequently visited by researchers and students, among others.
"If we do not sustain them, then the forthcoming generations will be left with nothing. So it is indeed very important that sites such as this should be protected and sustained."
Phoofolo says the Sibudu Cave is now listed among iconic sites such as the uKhahlamba Drakensberg and iSimangaliso Wetland parks.
"The tourists are interested in cultural heritage sites, and they visit this site from time to time. When you look at the Inanda Heritage Route, it has so many sites; it is not only Sibudu; there are so many other sites."
The other two sites given heritage statues are the Diepkloof Rock Shelter near Elands Bay and the Pinnacle Point Site Complex in Mossel Bay in the Western Cape.
