The DA in KwaZulu-Natal is demanding an apology from Premier Willies Mchunu following comment he made in the legislature - which the party believes are divisive.

Mchunu had been responding to a Heritage Day debate.

The DA claims Mchunu suggested Indians can't lay claim to land - as they were brought to South Africa, and would have settled on land that previously belonged to other groups.

The DA's Sharon Hoosen says Mchunu's comments go against social cohesion.

"The Premier's response showed that the minorities in South Africa do not matter. It came out quite clear in his response. That was an insult because as South Africans, the Constitution is quite clear - South Africa belongs to all who live in it and this includes the minorities who live in South Africa," Hoosen said.

The Premier's spokesperson, Mandla Msomi has hit back saying the DA was quick to interpret the comments as divisive when Mchunu was stating facts surrounding the country's history.

"That Indians are not part of South Africa - is preposterous. The Premier would never would have said such a thing. Before colleagues from the Indian and White community arrived in the country - there were people on the land but that does not in any way suggest that they do not belong to South Africa," Msomi said.
