The home caters to children, the elderly, as well as the physically and mentally disabled.

Board member Nirode Bramdaw says security guards were assaulted, and staff were held up by the gang.

Bramdaw says they escaped with a vehicle belonging to the home, groceries, and an undisclosed amount of money.

"One of our vehicles was accessed at 11:00pm last night and was used on about three trips  out of the campus faring goods from our central stores. From 11 last night till about 01:00am is when the tracker kicked in and immobilised the vehicle," he said.

He says there's a general sense of depression at the home - which provides shelter for 700 people.
