At least 48 gunned down by police in KZN: IPID

The Institute for Security Studies says it is disturbed by a report which shows that the number of people killed by police has gone up.

According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate, IPID, 51 deaths were recorded in KwaZulu-Natal last year with at least 48 people gunned down this year.  

The province with the highest number of deaths is Gauteng, 59 people were killed in 2016 followed by at least 45 this year. 

The Free State was third on the list.

Lizette Lancaster who is with the ISS says the issue of how much police force can be used - has always been a challenging one.

"It could be because of stand-offs between police and criminals, it could be just improper. We have seen incidents where police have been apprehending people through excessive use of force. So, there might be a combination of factors at play," she said.
