KZN, Western Cape account for half of new Covid cases

KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape now account for more than 50 % of the country’s new daily Covid-19 infections.

Statistics released by the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) on Tuesday show that South Africa recorded 6 590 new daily infections. 


The Western Cape accounts for 30% of the infections while KwaZulu-Natal accounts for 23% of those infections.


In Gauteng, the country’s previous epicentre, new daily infections continue to decrease.


Only 19% of new infections have been recorded in Gauteng, with the Eastern Cape accounting for 11%.


Mpumalanga, the Free State and the North West each accounted for 4%, while the Northern Cape and Limpopo represent only 2% of the country's new daily infections. 


Covid-19 related deaths continue to increase daily, with 189 new fatalities reported in just 24 hours.


The country’s national Covid-19 death toll now stands at 75 201.
