KZN school counsellor to apply for bail in rape case
Updated | By News24
A school guidance counsellor facing charges of child rape will apply for bail in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.
The 31-year-old man faces three charges of raping children and is under investigation for 10 to 15 more cases, The Witness newspaper reported last week.
The counsellor has been fired from his job at a primary school. He allegedly threatened the children by telling them he would kill their parents.
Senior prosecutor, Patti David, told the court last Monday that the man took boys between the ages of four and nine to his office, where he allegedly sexually abused or raped them.
She said the man had apparently targeted children with problems, or who were from unstable backgrounds.
'Monster touch'
According to The Witness, the alleged abuse was uncovered when one boy told his father that he had played a game called “monster touch” with the counsellor.
The father took his son to hospital, where he was examined and found to have been sexually penetrated.
Since the counsellor’s arrest, more children had come forward with claims of abuse, David told the court.
The State intended opposing bail. David previously told the court that police still needed to establish the man’s personal circumstances, obtain warrants to search his premises, and interview the alleged victims.
The chairperson of the school’s governing body told The Witness the counsellor had been fired and that professional counselling was being offered to students.
