This as confirmed cases in KZN, as of yesterday stand at 8 433 with 3 417 recoveries and just over 100 deaths.

As of Sunday, KZN has confirmed 8 433 cases, 109 deaths and 3 417 recoveries.

Nationally the total number of positive cases stands at 138 134. The country recorded 43 new COVID-19 related fatalities bringing the death toll to 2 456. There've been 68 925 recoveries so far.

Zikalala says eThekwini, ILembe and uMgungundlovu have had a surge of cases since the beginning of June.

He says while eThekwini remains the epicentre provincially, ILembe is now the third-highest district after a slight decrease in new cases over two weeks.

"When it comes to cases- in eThekwini we have 4 524 cases but of that close to 3 000 have recovered. ILembe, we currently have 889 cases and in uMgungundlovu 877, uThukela there is 351, and in King Cetshwayo there is 260," he says.

The premier says the stigmatisation of people who need to get tested or against those who have tested positive still remains a major challenge.

"When we need to fetch people so that they can be tested and quarantined, they plead with our teams to either come late at night to collect them or send their vehicles a few houses down the road so that neighbours will not see them going to quarantine.

"It is unacceptable that people have to be forced to go to such lengthy processes to hide their association with COVID-19," he says.
