KZN ranks 2nd highest in Corruption Watch complaints

A report by Corruption Watch revealed that KwaZulu-Natal recorded the second-highest number of complaints in 2024.

The anti-corruption agency released its annual report on Thursday. 

 

The organisation says Gauteng was responsible for the highest number of reports across provinces, with 45% of complaints, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 11%, Western Cape with 9%, and the Eastern Cape with 8%. 

 

Johannesburg, Tshwane, Cape Town, eThekwini, and Ekurhuleni recorded the highest number of corruption reports, accounting for 51% of all reported corruption incidents.

 

Maladministration was reported as the most dominant form of corruption accounting for 34% of the reports, it was followed by fraud at 21%,  employment irregularities at 16%, bribery or extortion at 15% and procurement irregularities at 13%. 

 

In terms of subsectors, policing had the most complaints at 13%, followed by the business sector at 12%, basic education at 11%, and state-owned entities at 7%. 

 

"We are all accountable, and we must recognise and promote this value in all the circumstances of our lives. In so doing, we can begin to change the narrative around what we expect from the state and society,” said former executive director of CW Karam Singh. 

 

Corruption Watch received over 46,000 complaints since 2012, while over 540 complaints were made in 2024.
