KZN Premier appeals to protesting students
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
KZN Premier Willies Mchunu has pleaded with protesting students to ensure they remain peaceful.
He says protesting students must look at the implications of their actions as space at universities as well as next year's new intake will be affected if exams are not written this year.
Mchunu has acknowledged the students' cause but says the way protests are being staged is wrong.
"At a meeting on Wednesday, the government of KwaZulu-Natal advised the Premier that through the human resources development council, the premier must start engaging with the heads of tertiary institutions to establish how they are dealing with these issues and whether there are any hopes of getting to grips with the issues quite soon," he said.
Meanwhile, the Westville Community Policing Forum's Mike Myers says unrest is reducing the resources available to communities.
"The station is operating on skeleton staff. Our members are now placed at those universities. These are the type of things that reinforces the necessity to have community involvement and that we work together with the police and assist them. Right now, we don't have the right amount of vehicles operating in our areas that we normally do," he said.
