Investigators are trying to get to the bottom of a deadly drive-by shooting in Inanda, that claimed the lives of three women.

"While the circumstances around Inanda might not be clear, what we know for a fact is that each time as we approach a national or local government election, we see a dramatic increase in the number of political killings and they are linked very clearly to money and power and not ideology."

Imraan Buccus has been commenting on the murders of Ncami Shange, Beatrice Nzama and Philisiwe Jili.

They'd been attending an African National Congress (ANC) meeting to finalise candidates for the November 1st elections on Saturday.

Buccus says political violence in the province goes back to the late 1980s.

"Between Inkatha as it was then and the United Democratic Front and that raged through those years was a kind of ideological contestation between the IFP which was seen as conservative, authoritarian pro-apartheid and a form of Zulu nationalism lead by Inkatha and they were taking on left-wing democratic sort of modernising anti-apartheid force."
