KZN Police Chief seeks stronger ties with Neighborhood Watch

KZN Police Chief Nhlanhla Mkwanazi  wants Neighbourhood Watch groups to work with local police and  not take the law into their own hands.

"If there is anything you want to do, call the police so that the police are in front and you are behind us. Let us do the job while we are there." 


He briefed the media yesterday on the latest crime figures since April.


Over 35 thousand suspects were arrested for a variety of crimes  with around 11 thousand  arrests for contact crimes including murder, assault and rape.

He warned that watch groups become easy targets for criminals. " These criminals attack the police, so if they attack the police and we give them tools to protect themselves, how much more for a person who doesn't have those tools to protect themselves."


 "Even so once you start patrolling the streets and you behave as if you are a law enforcement officer, you can get hurt and you don't want to share information you want to act on your own."
