KZN oncology crisis: Premier's Office studying report

The Health Department in KZN says the South African Human Rights Commission report into public health services is being studied by the premier.

The report, which was released yesterday, found that the department has violated the right to treatment of cancer patients.


The SAHRC also found the department to have failed to identify the need for functional equipment such as CT scanners and to recruit and retain suitably qualified staff including oncologists and radiotherapists.

It followed a complaint laid by DA Spokesperson on Health, Dr. Imran Keeka.


The party is calling for MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo to resign.


Department spokesperson, Desmond Motha says they've decided that it is going to be first handled by the Premier's Office.

Meanwhile, the South African Medical Association says the lack of accountability by the provincial health department for the  crisis is concerning. 


Chairman of KZN Coastal branch, Dr. Mvuyisi Mzukwa says more needs to be done to address the problems that have been highlighted by the SAHRC.


"We have always told the public what is happening and the department has always been in denial. Now the report is out, [showing] the department has clearly failed the patients as we have always said," he said.
