KZN Human Settlements turns to govt buildings for flood victims
Updated | By Tamasha Khanyi
The Department of Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal says it will be making use of derelict government buildings in future to provide homes for flood victims.

It has been housing them in various facilities, including hotels.
Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says meetings with Public Works officials are ongoing.
"If you look at the facilities we have been using in eThekwini, we paid more that R185 million since the floods of 2022. This has [led] us to consult.”

Sibiya has also clarified that the lodge that the department has bought in Montclair, in the south of Durban, will only be used as temporary emergency accommodation, while permanent homes are being built.
Sibiya says houses are being built on state-owned land in Cornubia and on land donated by traditional leaders.
