Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says 18 learners and one teacher have lost their lives in the torrential rain and flooding that hit KwaZulu-Natal.
Motshekga says the floods have forced the KZN Education Department to close some schools until next week.
She says more than 120 schools have been left damaged.

"This is a catastrophe and the damage is unprecedented. What is even more worrying is that more rain is expected in the same areas that are already affected."
