The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal says it's making progress in its efforts to safely reopen the province's flood-affected schools.

The number of pupils who died in the disaster two weeks ago, has climbed to 64.
"Out of 630 schools that we reported on that were affected about 500 of them were able to operate as from last week Tuesday, even if it was to at full capacity," says spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi.
"Out of 102 schools could not be accessed because of roads and bridges that have collapsed and any other blockages. But now the number has been reduced to 72."

Mahlambi says they will be supplying learning material to 263 children who lost their school books.
"We are appealing to all the school principals to still accept learners who don't have uniform because we are aware that many learners have lost their homes and everything, including their exercise books, some have even lost their parents, and some are kept in halls."
