KZN Edu saddened by boys' drownings in Umdloti River

KZN Education officials say they are shocked and saddened to have learned of the tragic drownings of two school boys in Umdloti River.

Andile Ngema and Sibongokuhle Msami, aged 11 and 12 years  lost their lives while they were swimming on Thursday evening.


The Waterloo Primary School pupils had gone fishing with friends.


"It's alleged that the boys were part of a group that was going to the river to fish or swim when got into difficulty and drowned. Police in Verulam are investigating an inquest docket," says KZN police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda. 


The Education Department’s Muzi Mahlambi says they will be reaching out to the families and the boys’ school.


"We are saddened by the news of our boys from Waterloo Primary School. We don't have all the details as yet given the fact that Friday was a school holiday .


"When we reopen on Tuesday we are hopeful that the family will have interacted with the school so that we get the full details of what transpired," says Mahlambi.
