The 51-year-old was arrested on Friday - apparently after being on the run for two years.

His seven co-accused were caught in 2018.

Authorities say they defrauded the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) of about R25 million.

KZN Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo says the doctor has also been linked to a murder case, which his co-accused have already been convicted for.

"He is facing charges of fraud and corruption emanating from the case that happened between 2005 and 2008, which resulted in the killing of a SASSA official who was actually shot at Ngwelezane offices.

"A doctor was appointed by SASSA; however, he broke the habits and moral and worked with the syndicate that was processing the irregular file."
